Show Your Teeth Some Respect

Think about how many times per day you rely on your teeth. You use them to chew breakfast, lunch, dinner, and snacks. You press your tongue against them to make certain sounds when you speak. There's really no doubt about it — your teeth are important, and they deserve your respect. You can pay them that respect by visiting your dentist for regular cleaning and checkup appointments. You should also call at the first sign of dental pain, tooth discoloration, or other oral health changes. Spring Cleaning For Your Mouth's Benefit

by April Myers

While you are spring cleaning your home, you should take the time to make sure you are also tending to tasks that are going to help you to keep your mouth and teeth healthy and looking good. Here are some of the things that you should incorporate into your spring-cleaning duties that will help you with your overall oral health and well-being:

Replace toothbrushes

Understand that toothbrushes should be in good condition if you are to expect them to do their job correctly. A fresh toothbrush will have bristles that can reach into the small crevices they need to reach into in order to clean properly. As a toothbrush gets worn, the bristles will lose this ability, leaving your teeth more susceptible to cavities, stains, and other issues.

Toothbrushes can be cleaned by boiling them in a pot of water. However, it's better to just replace the toothbrush with a new one. If you haven't replaced your toothbrush recently when you are doing your spring-cleaning, then you should take advantage of the opportunity to give everyone a fresh toothbrush at this time. While you're at it, you should run the toothbrush holder through the dishwasher.

Replace your oral care products

Spring-cleaning time is also a good time to go through your oral care products, such as your bottles of mouthwash, and make sure you check the dates. Get rid of any with expiration dates that are quickly approaching or already past, and replace them with new bottles. Not only will old mouthwash not taste as fresh, but it also isn't going to be as effective at doing its job. This is also a good opportunity for you to stock up on more dental floss, extra tubes of toothpaste, and anything else that you have in your dental care arsenal.

Go in for your dental exam and cleaning

You should also set up an appointment to go in for your dental exam and cleaning while you're already tending to the house and your oral care supplies. When you make it a habit of going in to see the dentist at the same time each year, it will help to prevent you from accidentally missing an appointment, which can leave you more susceptible to having dental issues come up and leave your teeth looking discolored and stained. Getting the cleaning done at this time of the year will also ensure your smile is looking good when you are spending more time out and about in the nicer weather.
